Convention Program Abstract
Clinical supervisors may be “vicariously liable” for the acts of a supervisee if courts determine that injuries were caused by the negligence of a supervisee. The program will 1) outline the legal basis of clinical supervision, 2) identify factors courts consider when determining liability and, 3) provide ten risk management activities. Presenters include an attorney with 20+ years of experience consulting with counselors and clinical supervisors and a counselor educator who supervises both pre/post-degree counselors.

Convention Program Abstract
Students who are performing academically but who demonstrate troubling emotional, interpersonal, or character deficiencies present difficult moral, ethical and legal challenges. Faculty seek to 1) provide support, encouragement, and honest feedback; 2) remain fair and patient knowing that many developmental variables affect student progress; and 3) at the same time not lose sight of our gatekeeper responsibilities. This presentation will outline legal steps and procedures that can help in the management of this problem.
