Under the best of circumstances family life can be complex; it can be one of the most fulfilling experiences in life and, just as surely, it can provide challenges that leave well-meaning adults gasping for air. Family counseling is a powerful approach to resolving personal and family problems. In the counseling office, family members can honestly and productively talk about important issues and challenges in the family.

Some family problems are typical…almost expected. Examples include:

•  Conflict and disagreements between children and parents
•  Challenges to boundaries and limits
•  Adolescent sexuality and/or substance use experimentation
•  School (behavior/academic) problems

There are other family problems that threaten the very existence of the family and/or family members. Intense family therapy (in combination with other therapies) is required. Examples include:
•  Serious mental health or substance abuse
•  Acute health crisis or chronic health challenge
•  Domestic violence
•  Divorce and/or separation
•  Remarriage & family blending
Major dislocation (Hurricane Katrina)
Death of a family member

Family therapy, in conjunction with other therapies and treatments can help typical family problems from escalating into more serious and threatening family crises.
